CNC Rotary Tables – An Overview
CNC rotary table, commonly abbreviated as RC is an integral part used in CNC machineries to improve the productivity of the said machine. It is basically a work holding unit on a CNC machinery not just used to place the parts in any preferred position but also perform machining on various faces of the same object. A lot of time and money is wasted while drilling holes in the surface of the object while working at the same time other processes are going on simultaneously. Hence, the rotary table has been instrumental in making the CNC machinery more productive.
In order to fully grasp the concept of how CNC Rotary Table works, it is imperative to describe the entire machining process of the CNC machines. The basic operation of CNC machinery consists of three main functions namely, boring of the design into the material, engraving of the design on the material and finally finishing of the product by the use of finishing materials like wood or plastic. In all these operations, there is always a specific role for the rotary tools. For example, while drilling a hole in the material, the work piece is placed on top of the rotating shaft and the work piece is moved down the CNC rotary table in a radial direction. When the work piece is moved in a radial direction, the drill bit should be spun around by the CNC worm gear in such a way that the work piece remains stationary and does not rotate.
The CNC rotary table has two axes of operation namely, the X-axis and Y-axis. The two axes of operation are usually referred to as the “vertical” axis of CNC rotary tables and “horizontal” axis of CNC horizontal tables. The use of CNC machinery in vertical machining centers requires a different approach in comparison to the CNC horizontal and vertical machining centers.
Typically, when the CNC rotary tables are used in the vertical machining centres, they are used for horizontal processes only. The CNC rotary tables may be rotated in a horizontal manner to cut out parts according to the specification of the production level. This process is known as “turbulent cutting”. However, the mechanical properties of the CNC rotary desks in vertical machining centres are very much different when compared to the other kind of CNC rotary desks.
When the horizontal pallet is designed, the process gets more time-consuming because of the movement of workpieces. The CNC rotary desks help in achieving better productivity with simultaneous machining operations. The simultaneous machining operation here refers to the process of simultaneously cutting out one piece of material from a horizontal pallet and simultaneously pressing another piece of material into the same slot. This type of operation is achieved by turning the CNC rotary table in such a manner that it comes into contact with both pieces of the pallet at the same time.
